Tips for Managing Reimbursements Between Co-Parents

Timely submission of children’s shared expenses and reimbursement of these requests in a prompt manner can really help in a co-parenting relationship. Here are few easy ways to manage this process and make it less overwhelming:

  • Do not let a stack of requests build up over months. You will miss things, lose receipts and many states actually have in the family law code that reimbursement requests must be submitted within 30 days of incurring the charge and reimbursed within 30 days of receiving the request.
  • Use an App that allows you to take a picture in real-time of the receipt or invoice and submit it to the other parent. These Apps will track when you submitted it and remind the other party that payment is due. Many apps will also do payment management as well. 2Houses, Fayr, and Talking Parents are a couple of Apps to check out.
  • If you aren’t using an App to manage these requests:
    • Have an envelope or folder to keep invoices and receipts for your reimbursements so that you aren’t hunting for them when you are putting together your request.
    • Schedule time in your calendar bi-weekly or monthly to put together the request and document support to submit to your co-parent.
