Why it is Important to Get a Copy of Your Credit Report During Divorce Preparation

When preparing for divorce it is important to get a copy of your credit report. This is something that everyone should really do a few times a year at least but is particularly important in the world of divorce.

You will want to understand the following:

1) What is your credit score? Do you need to work on repairing your credit?

2) What accounts do you have open? You will need a list of open accounts for your divorce paperwork typically. Is your spouse on these accounts as well? If so, consider removing him/her or closing the accounts.

3) How much credit do you have available to you? If you don’t have any then it is time to open a credit card account to start building credit of your own.

The three top credit bureaus, TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian, offer free credit reports quarterly typically and these do not hurt your credit to run a report so rotate who you are requesting one from to avoid the cost.
